Inspiring experiences at the EACD/IAACD conference: working together for children’s well-being

The annual conference of the European Academy of Childhood Disability – International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability (EACD/IAACD) took place in Heidelberg (Germany) on June 24-28, 2025, and was attended by Bambino SPA kinesitherapist Gintarė Urbonavičienė.

An inspiring, international event bringing together researchers, professionals, families and people with experience from more than 20 countries. The theme of the conference, “Developing Networks – Networks for Development”, invited not only to share scientific knowledge but also to build collaborative networks that contribute to the well-being of children with disabilities worldwide.

Contemporary themes that are changing the way we think about helping the child

The speakers of the conference presented topics that not only reflect contemporary trends, but also change the way we think about helping children:

  • The latest treatments for cerebral palsy – from surgery to early intervention;
  • Integrating technology into rehabilitation – robotics, smart systems, virtual reality;
  • Empowering children and families – how parents become decision-makers and children become active participants;
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation – when professionals work as a team;
  • A strengths-based approach – less about constraints and more about opportunities.

These themes revealed not only scientific progress, but also the human touch that children, their families and all those who work with children with disabilities need.

Not just knowledge, but values too

Much of the discussion revolved around how to actively involve children in decision-making – even if their communication is alternative, their voices must be heard.

Key messages:

  • Children are not a diagnosis, but a person – with their own needs, strengths and dreams;
  • Technology is changing rehabilitation – but the relationship remains key;
  • Parents and professionals are not separate parties, but one team;
  • When you give a child a voice, you may be surprised how much they want to say.

Together for an inclusive future

This experience in Heidelberg has shown once again that innovation has no borders. International networks, joint projects and common goals can help to standardise the quality of care for children around the world.

Gintarė returns inspired, with new ideas and even more faith in an inclusive future!
